From the time she was a teenager, Jennifer developed a strong interest in filmmaking and women's history, inspired by her first feminist friend who showed her that history as we have learned it in schools has notoriously left women out of the picture. She entered Hampshire College in 1981 and pursued a degree with an emphasis in film production and women's studies. After graduating in 1985, Jennifer moved to San Francisco to pursue a career in filmmaking.

Jennifer was a member of the visual effects team at Lucasfilm's Industrial Light + Magic. During her work on such films as Ghost, The Hunt for Red October and Back to the Future 2. This documentary, about a little-known architect whose work had been over looked by modern-day historians was the first time Jennifer began to combine her feminism with filmmaking. Narrated by the actor Ellen Burstyn, this film has been shown at numerous film festivals, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC, and it garnered a National Educational Media Network Award. Susan Stamberg of NPR's Morning Edition interviewed Jennifer in December 2000 about her film on Mary Jane Colter.

In 2002 the changing political climate in the United States prompted her to create sharply political films on reproductive rights for display on the Internet. The museum curator for the History of Birth Control and Abortion Museum in Vienna, Austria saw the films. These three short films have been on permanent display at the museum since 2003.
